Mount Maungatautari
The names listed refer to locations in the Waikato region of New Zealand, centered around the town of Cambridge (Māori: Kemureti) and the nearby Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari.
Locations
- Cambridge (Kemureti): A town in the Waipā District known as the "Town of Trees & Champions".
- Roto-o-rangi: A rural area and settlement near Cambridge, known for its farming history and community hall. The area offers views of the nearby mountain.
- Maungatautari Mountain: An ancient, 797-metre-high extinct stratovolcano that is a prominent local landmark. It is home to the Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari ecological reserve.
Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari
The mountain is the site of the largest pest-proof fenced sanctuary in the world, surrounded by a 47km fence that protects 3,400 hectares of native forest. This conservation effort provides a safe haven for many of New Zealand's most endangered native species, including:
- Kiwi
- Kākāpō
- Takahē
- Kākā
- Tuatara
Visitors can explore the sanctuary through various walking and hiking tracks, including the family-friendly Southern Enclosure (Te Tuia a Taane) loop and the more challenging "Over the Mountain" track. The Southern Enclosure features a visitor centre and a 16-meter-high canopy viewing tower.
For more information on visiting the area, you can check the official Sanctuary Mountain website or the Waipā District Council website.
